Indians 11, Tigers 8 – Indians snap Verlander’s streak in 11-8 rout of Tigers
Jose Ramirez homered twice, and the Cleveland Indians snapped Justin Verlander’s decade-long streak of games with at least one strikeout, chasing the Detroit star in the fourth inning of an 11-8 win over the Tigers on Sunday.  Verlander (5-5) had struck out a batter in 331 consecutive appearances and was tied with Curt Schilling for the sixth-longest streak since 1913. He hadn’t gone without a strikeout since April 28, 2007, when he lasted only three innings against Minnesota. On Sunday, he allowed seven runs and nine hits with three walks in 3 1/3 innings. Mike Clevinger (4-3) allowed a run and two hits in six innings. He walked five and struck out seven. The Indians held on after Detroit scored six runs in the ninth inning, including homers by James McCann and Nick Castellanos. Cody Allen retired the final batter for his 16th save in 17 chances.

White Sox 6, Rangers 5 – Sanchez homers in 8th, White Sox beat Rangers 6-5
Yolmer Sanchez hit a two-run home run with two outs in the eighth to rally the Chicago White Sox to a 6-5 win over the Texas Rangers on Sunday.  The Rangers had the bases loaded in the ninth, but David Robertson (4-2) struck out Carlos Gomez to end the game. Todd Frazier walked with one out in the eighth and, two batters later, Sanchez drove the ball to right-center off Texas reliever Jose Leclerc (1-2) for his fourth homer of the season. It handed the Rangers bullpen its American League-leading 17th blown save. Jonathan Lucroy had given the Rangers a 5-4 lead with a two-run single in the fifth. Melky Cabrera also homered for Chicago, and Mike Napoli hit his 16th for Texas.

Cubs 6, Reds 2 – Arrieta sharp again, Happ homers twice as Cubs beat Reds 6-2
Jake Arrieta pitched one-hit ball for seven innings without allowing a stolen base on Sunday, and Ian Happ homered twice in the ballpark where he played as a college star, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 6-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.  Arrieta (8-6) was coming off a subpar performance that created friction and a surprise move. Back in the ballpark where he threw a no-hitter last season, Arrieta was back in form, allowing only Joey Votto’s first-inning single and a pair of walks. Happ hit a two-run homer and a solo shot off Tim Adleman (5-5), and added an RBI single. Anthony Rizzo also had a solo homer, and Javier Baez doubled home a run.

Tonight

MLB – Harper leads voting for midsummer classic
Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper and New York Yankees rookie outfielder Aaron Judge are the top vote-getters in their respective leagues for the upcoming Major League All-Star game in Miami. Harper led all players with over 4.6 million votes and is joined in the National League starting outfield by Colorado’s Charlie Blackmon and Marcell Ozuna of the Marlins. The NL starting infield has first baseman Ryan Zimmerman and second baseman Daniel Murphy, both of the Nationals. Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado and Reds shortstop Zack Cozart fill out the infield, with Giants catcher Buster Posey behind the plate. udge was the AL’s top vote-getter and will be part of a starting outfield that includes Houston’s George Springer and Mike Trout of the Angels. Trout is currently injured and plans to begin a rehab assignment this week. A pair of Astros are part of the AL’s starting infield after shortstop Carlos Correa and second baseman Jose Altuve were chosen in the balloting, along with Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez and Toronto first baseman Justin Smoak. Kansas City’s Salvador Perez will be the starting catcher for the Junior Circuit, and Tampa Bay’s Corey Dickerson will serve as the designated hitter. The 12 first-time starters are the most since voting was returned to fans in 1970. Reliever Wade Davis was the only player chosen from the defending World Series-champion Cubs, and he wasn’t with the team last season. The Cubs had seven All-Stars in 2016.

NBA – Taj Gibson agrees to deal with Minnesota
A person with knowledge of the negotiations says Taj Gibson is reuniting with coach Tom Thibodeau, agreeing on a two-year, $28 million deal to join the Minnesota Timberwolves. Gibson has spent the bulk of his career in Chicago, including five seasons under Thibodeau. He has averaged 9.4 points and 6.3 rebounds during his NBA career.

NBA – Bulls, Justin Holiday agree to 2-year deal
A person familiar with the situation says the Chicago Bulls have agreed to a $9 million, two-year contract with guard Justin Holiday.  The person spoke Sunday night on condition of anonymity because the contract cannot be signed until Thursday.  Yahoo! Sports first reported the agreement. Holiday averaged 6.5 points in 27 games for the Bulls two years ago. He played in all 82 games for the New York Knicks last season, averaging 7.7 points, Holiday has averaged 5.7 points over four seasons with Philadelphia, Golden State, Atlanta, Chicago and New York. NBA/NHL – Lawsuit challenging public funding for Detroit arena dropped
A federal lawsuit seeking to block some public funding for the Little Caesars Arena and the Detroit Pistons’ move from the suburbs has been dropped.  The lawsuit was filed by activist Robert Davis and city clerk candidate D. Etta Wilcoxon. They argue the project shouldn’t be funded without a vote from Detroit residents. Their attorney submitted a court notice Saturday to voluntarily dismiss the case. The Detroit City Council had approved $34.5 million in taxpayer-funded bonds for the project. Detroit Corporation Counsel Melvin Hollowell says he’s pleased the city prevailed. But Davis says the case isn’t over. He is pursuing a related lawsuit to get the issue before voters.  The arena will be home to the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings and the NBA’s Pistons. It opens this fall.

NHL – Vegas acquires center Marcus Kruger in trade with Blackhawks
The Vegas Golden Knights have landed Chicago Blackhawks center Marcus Kruger, after all.  Two weeks after not selecting Kruger in the NHL expansion draft, Vegas gave up undisclosed future considerations to acquire the two-time Stanley Cup-winner in a trade with the Blackhawks on Sunday.  Used primarily as a checking-line forward, Kruger had five goals and 12 assists for 17 points in 70 games last season. Overall, he has 33 goals and 72 assists for 105 points in 398 games over seven seasons. Kruger’s departure frees up much-needed salary cap space for the Blackhawks a season after signing him to a three-year $9.25 million contract. The Golden Knights opened up cap space to add Kruger a day earlier, when they traded defenseman Alexei Emelin to Nashville.

Golf – PGA – Stanley outlasts Howell in playoff to win at Avenel
