Cubs 5, Nationals 4 – Cubs hold on after Nationals rally for 4 in 9th, win 5-4
Wade Davis struck out big league batting leader Ryan Zimmerman with runners on second and third to end Washington’s ninth-inning rally, and the Chicago Cubs held off the Nationals 5-4 Monday night. In jeopardy of being shut out for the first time this season, the NL East-leading Nationals scored four times in the ninth. Their comeback began against Hector Rondon and continued when Davis entered. With Washington down 5-3, Bryce Harper’s single loaded the bases with two outs. Davis threw a wild pitch that scored a run before striking out a swinging Zimmerman, who’s hitting .344. The final pitch bounced, and catcher Willson Contreras zipped a low throw to first baseman Anthony Rizzo to close out the victory.  Contreras hit a leadoff home run in his first career game-opening at-bat and Eddie Butler (4-2) worked five scoreless innings to keep the Cubs ahead.

Yankees 6, White Sox 5 – Montgomery, Austin lead Yankees past White Sox
Jordan Montgomery matched his season high with seven solid innings and closer Aroldis Chapman shut down a ninth-inning rally just in time, lifting the Yankees over the Chicago White Sox 6-5 on Monday night.  New York led 6-1 entering the ninth, but Yankees reliever Chasen Shreve gave up a three-run homer to Tim Anderson and Chapman allowed an RBI double to Jose Abreu. Chapman retired Avisail Garcia and Todd Frazier to finish his eighth save and first since returning from the disabled list a week ago. Recently recalled outfielder Tyler Austin lined a solo homer and had a sacrifice fly for New York, which won for the third time in 13 games to keep pace with Boston atop the AL East. Montgomery improved to 4-0 over his last five starts. The 6-foot-6 left-hander allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked one.

NFL – Vikings player jailed for failed alcohol tests
An Arizona judge has ordered Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Michael Floyd to serve one day in jail for failing alcohol tests that he blames on a type of fermented tea. Floyd and his lawyer did not attend the Scottsdale City Court hearing Monday and had a teleconference with Judge Statia Hendrix.  The hearing was meant to give Floyd the chance to make his case regarding the failed alcohol tests and another one he missed earlier this month, which stemmed from a 2016 drunken driving arrest where Scottsdale police say they found him passed out behind the wheel.  Vikings officials say they encouraged Floyd to drink a fermented tea called kombucha.  Hendrix ordered Floyd to start his additional jail time Monday evening in Phoenix before concluding his final five days of house arrest.

NCAA Football – Baylor says it’s being investigated by NCAA after sexual assault scandal
Baylor University officials say the school is being investigated by the NCAA in the wake of a sexual assault scandal that led to the firing of football coach Art Briles and the departure of the school president. In a legal filing last week, Baylor lawyers told a federal judge the NCAA probe is “an ongoing, pending investigation.” Attorneys for several women suing the school have demanded Baylor turn over its communications with the NCAA. A Baylor spokeswoman declined further comment.  ESPN reported in May that the NCAA had conducted interviews with Baylor officials, former employees and alleged victims but that the school hadn’t been given a formal notice of investigation. NCAA officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.

NBA – Russell Westbrook wins NBA’s MVP Award
Russell Westbrook has won the NBA’s MVP award after setting a record with 42 triple-doubles last season. The Oklahoma City All-Star joined Oscar Robertson as the only players to average a triple-double for an entire season, leading the Thunder into the playoffs after Kevin Durant left for Golden State.  Westbrook beat out Houston’s James Harden and San Antonio forward Kawhi Leonard for the league’s top honor. He ended the two-year reign of Stephen Curry, who last season was the league’s first unanimous MVP. It capped off the NBA Awards show Monday night, which included stirring tributes to Monty Williams, Craig Sager and Bill Russell.

NBA – Other NBA Awards

  • Draymond Green is the Defensive Player of the Year, ending Kawhi Leonard’s two-year reign. Green was rewarded for his do-everything role with the NBA champion Golden State Warriors. He led the league in steals and on Feb. 10 had the league’s first triple-double ever that didn’t include points, finishing with 11 rebounds, 10 steals and 10 assists.
  • The Milwaukee Bucks and Houston Rockets have become double winners. Giannis Antetokounmpo won the Most Improved Player award, following Malcolm Brogdon’s victory for Rookie of the Year to open the show Monday night.
  • Houston’s Mike D’Antoni was voted Coach of the Year, the second time he has won the award. He led the Rockets to 55 victories and a league record for 3-pointers this season. D’Antoni, who also won the award while coaching Phoenix, followed Rockets guard Eric Gordon’s win for Sixth Man of the Year.
  • Houston guard Eric Gordon has won the Sixth Man of the Year award in his first year as a reserve. Gordon beat out Rockets teammate Lou Williams and former NBA Finals MVP Andre Iguodala for the award given to the league’s top player off the bench. He set an NBA single-season record for most 3-pointers off the bench, helping the high-scoring Rockets make more shots behind the arc than any team in history.

Hockey – Hockey Hall of Fame names new members
Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya were a dynamic duo in Anaheim for several years, and now they are going into the Hockey Hall of Fame together. The longtime Ducks teammates are the headliners for the Hall of Fame’s class of 2017, which includes the long-overdue additions of Mark Recchi, Dave Andreychuk and longtime Canadian university coach Clare Drake. Canadian star Danielle Goyette became the fifth women’s player elected, and Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs got in as part of the builder category.
