Mariners 6, Tigers 2 – Mike Zunino continues tear, leads Mariners past Tigers 6-2
Mike Zunino continued his torrid month with a pair of two-run home runs, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 6-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night. Beginning a stretch with 16 of 19 games at home prior to the All-Star break, the Mariners used a trio of homers to hand the Tigers their third straight loss and ninth in the last 13 games. Guillermo Heredia lined a two-run homer in the fifth inning to pull Seattle even at 2-all, and Zunino’s eighth homer since being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on May 23 gave Seattle the lead. Quickly behind in the count against Alex Wilson (1-4), Zunino worked it to 3-2 and drove a slider beyond the bullpens in deep left field. James Pazos (2-1) got out of a bases-loaded jam with strikeouts of Mikie Mahtook and Andrew Romine in the sixth.
Cubs 3, Padres 2 – Contreras hits HR, Baez scores on error, Cubs beat Padres
Willson Contreras hit a tying home run, Javier Baez scored the winning run on an error and Wade Davis worked out of a ninth-inning jam to lead the Chicago Cubs past the San Diego Padres 3-2. Anthony Rizzo thrived in the leadoff spot again, extending his career-high hitting streak to 13 games by going 2 for 3 with an RBI as Chicago won its second straight to improve to 35-34. Jose Pirela and Yangervis Solarte each had a solo homer for the Padres, but Pirela’s error allowed the winning run to score. Hector Rondon (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning for the win. Davis had runners on second and third with one out, but struck out Wil Myers and Hunter Renfroe grounded out for his 14th save in 14 chances. Kirby Yates (1-1) allowed one unearned run to get the loss.

NBA – Celtics trade No. 1 overall draft pick to 76ers
The Boston Celtics have traded the No. 1 pick in this week’s NBA draft to the Philadelphia 76ers. Boston will get the Sixers’ pick, No. 3 overall, and another first-rounder in 2018 or 2019. The teams agreed to the deal over the weekend, hours after expected top pick Markelle Fultz worked out for the Sixers. Philadelphia will select first for the second straight year. There could be more moves ahead for Boston. After finishing with the No. 1 seed in the East this season, the Celtics are trying to package some of their picks for an established star that could help them close the gap on NBA finalists Cleveland and Golden State.
NBA – Cavs, GM Griffin part after title, 3 straight NBA finals
David Griffin’s run with the Cleveland Cavaliers is over after one championship and three straight trips to the NBA Finals. The general manager and team mutually parted ways on Monday when owner Dan Gilbert said Griffin’s contract will not be extended once it expires June 30. Gilbert said in a statement that he wanted to thank Griffin for "his role in the franchise’s first NBA Championship." Griffin’s departure comes on the anniversary of the Cavs’ dramatic Game 7 win over Golden State, capping a historic comeback that gave Cleveland its first major professional sports championship since 1964. He’s also leaving three days before the draft — the Cavs are currently without a pick — and on the eve of free agency. Cleveland could have a busy summer as it looks to revamp its roster after losing to the Warriors in five games in this year’s Finals.
Hockey – US Hockey Hall of Fame Class released
This year’s U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame class is headlined by former Boston University coach Jack Parker and longtime NHL coach Ron Wilson. USA Hockey announced the inductees today. Retired NHL official Kevin Collins, three-time Olympic women’s team coach Ben Smith and 17-year NHL veteran Scott Young were also picked.
NFL – Lions sign 3rd-round pick wide receiver Kenny Golladay
The Detroit Lions have all of their draft picks under contract now that third-round selection Kenny Golladay signed Monday. The wide receiver was the only Detroit draft pick who didn’t sign before the team’s rookie minicamp last month. The 6-foot-4, 213-pound Northern Illinois standout has an opportunity to be the Lions’ No. 3 receiver this season behind Golden Tate and Marvin Jones.
NFL – Justices say government can’t refuse disparaging trademarks
The Supreme Court has struck down part of a law that bans offensive trademarks, in a ruling that is expected to help the Washington Redskins in their legal fight over the team name. The court said the 71-year-old trademark law barring disparaging terms infringes on free speech rights. Redskins owner Dan Snyder says he’s "thrilled" with the decision. The case, brought by an Asian-American rock band called the Slants, was closely watched for the impact it would have on the separate dispute involving the Redskins. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office canceled the team’s trademark in 2014, saying the name offends American Indians. A federal appeals court put the case on hold while waiting for the Supreme Court to rule in the Slants case. Redskins attorney Lisa Blatt says the court’s decision effectively resolves the team’s dispute with the government. A trademark office spokesman said officials are reviewing the ruling and plan to issue further guidance.
America’s ski and snowboard team gets a new name
The leaders of the U.S. skiing and snowboarding team have decided one name is better than three. They are putting all their athletes under one umbrella and renaming their organization "U.S. Ski & Snowboard." It’s a subtle change designed to streamline a national governing body that has nearly 50,000 members and sends about 100 athletes to the Olympics every four years. The idea is to make clear that all those athletes — Alpine skiers, freestyle skiers and snowboarders — are part of the same team. They will also use a single logo instead of the three that were previously used for the different disciplines. The move is made in hopes of boosting endorsement dollars, by allowing the biggest sponsors to have a piece of all the snow athletes instead of only a certain segment.
Golf – Elderly golf fan who died at US Open lost wife days earlier
The elderly golf fan who died while attending the U.S. Open in Wisconsin had lost his wife of 68 years earlier in the week. Ninety-four-year-old Marshall "Chick" Jacobs died Friday in the arms of his son, Bill, after becoming unresponsive at the 6th green. Just three days earlier, Lucille Jacobs, died after experiencing complications from a broken hip. Bill Jacobs recalled that when his father made plans to go to the tournament when it was awarded to Erin Hills in 2010, he remarked that he hoped he would still be alive to attend. Jacobs tells the Journal Sentinel he and his dad spent "three hours of bliss" Friday watching the game’s greatest players. Family members say the two loved golf and traveled the country playing in couples’ leagues. A joint funeral is planned for Friday.
ECHL – Owners of Indy Fuel hockey team propose $40M development
