The Benton Harbor Farmers Market opens for the summer this Wednesday. Berrien County Health Department spokesperson Gillian Conrad tells our newsroom they organize the events each year to help Benton Harbor residents have access to healthy foods.

“There are no full-service grocery stores within the city limits of Benton Harbor,” Conrad said. “So, people do have to travel outside of city limits to the township to visit a grocery store where they can buy fresh produce.”

Conrad tells us the farmers market accepts WIC coupons and Bridge Cards. In addition to the sale of fresh fruits and veggies, they offer cooking demonstrations and activities for the kids. The farmers markets will be open each Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through September.
