Tigers 5, Rays 3 – Cabrera’s game-ending homer gives Tigers 5-3 win over Rays
Miguel Cabrera, who has been struggling with a sore back, did just that, going the opposite way for a two-run homer in the ninth inning to give the Detroit Tigers a 5-3 victory. The game was tied at three entering the ninth, but Alex Avila singled off Tommy Hunter (0-2) with one out. Andrew Romine pinch ran and trotted home when Cabrera hit his seventh career game-ending homer into the right-field stands.  Justin Wilson (3-2) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief.  Tigers starter Justin Verlander pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits and five walks. He’s now walked five batters three times this season after not doing it a single time in 2016. He struck out six. Alex Cobb gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings, striking out three.

White Sox 5, Orioles 2 – Davidson homers for 4th straight game; White Sox top O’s 5-2
Rookie Matt Davidson Davidson homered for the fourth straight game, then doubled and scored in a four-run sixth inning to lead Chicago over Baltimore 5-2 on Thursday, the Orioles’ seventh loss in eight games.  Davidson hit a solo homer in the fourth, his 14th home run this season. He became the first White Sox player to go deep in four straight games since Alex Rios in April 2013.  Caleb Joseph’s RBI double in the fifth tied the score 1-1, but Melky Cabrera hit a two-run single in the sixth that chased Chris Tillman (1-5). Chicago opened a 5-1 lead when Jimmy Yacabonis, making his third big league appearance, loaded the bases with a four-pitch walk to Tim Anderson, threw a head-high 3-2 pitch for ball four to Jose Abreu and allowed Leury Garcia’s sacrifice fly.  Chicago took three of four games in the series.

MLB – Rangers select South Haven native
The Texas Rangers have selected Adrian College shortstop Ryan Dorow in the 30th round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft.  Dorow is a South Haven native and is the active leader in NCAA Division III in hits, doubles, and total bases. He was named the MIAA most valuable player for the third straight season, the only player to ever do that.  He’s only the second player drafted from Adrian College and the first since 1974.  Dorow graduated from South Haven in 2013, where he lettered four years in baseball, three in basketball, and two in soccer.

Golf – US Open – Fowler leads US Open
Erin Hills was kind to Rickie Fowler and rough on several others during the first round of the U.S. Open. Fowler is atop the leaderboard following a 7-under 65 that included seven birdies and no bogeys. He birdied three straight holes while making the turn and tied the record for the lowest score in relation to par for a first round of a U.S. Open. Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf each shot 7-under 63s at Baltusrol in 1980. Fowler finds himself one shot ahead of Paul Casey and Xander Schauffele. Brian Harman, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood are at 5-under.
Seventeen players shot 3 under or better, Rory McIlroy signed for a 78 after joking that anyone who couldn’t hit such wide fairways should pack their bags and go home. Ernie Els opened with a 70 on the 20th anniversary of his last US Open victory.   Defending champ Dustin Johnson shot a 75 that included just one birdie.

Golf – LPGA – Henderson leads Meijer LPGA Classic
Brooke Henderson shot an 8-under 63 Thursday to top the star-packed leaderboard in the Meijer LPGA Classic. The 19-year-old Canadian eagled the par-5 eighth hole and had six birdies in a bogey-free round at Blythefield.

NFL – Lions acquire OT Robinson from Rams and sign OT Kouandjio
The Detroit Lions have bolstered their offensive line to make up for the potential loss of tackle Taylor Decker. Detroit acquired offensive tackle Greg Robinson from the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday morning for a draft pick that was not announced. The Lions also signed free agent Cyrus Kouandjio, another sign they are bracing for at least starting the season without Decker protecting Matthew Stafford’s blind side. Decker is out indefinitely after an offseason injury led to shoulder surgery. Robinson was Los Angeles’ starting left tackle in 14 games last season. The Rams drafted him No. 2 overall in 2014 out of Auburn. Kouandjio played in 12 games for the Buffalo Bills last season, his third in the NFL.

NBA – KCP gets a year of probation
Pistons guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has been sentenced to a year of probation in a March traffic stop in suburban Detroit. The Free Press reports Caldwell-Pope learned his punishment on Wednesday in a Rochester Hills courtroom after pleading guilty to allowing a person to drive under the influence. A charge of operating while intoxicated was dismissed.

NHL – Samuelsson and Granato to serve as Blackhawks assistant coaches
The Chicago Blackhawks have hired former NHL defenseman Ulf Samuelsson and Don Granato as assistant coaches on Joel Quenneville’s staff. Samuelsson played with Quenneville with the Hartford Whalers. The 53-year Samuelsson was the head coach of the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League last season.

NCAAMBB – NCAA slams Louisville
The NCAA has added several sanctions to Louisville’s self-imposed punishment following a sex scandal investigation of the men’s basketball team. The NCAA’s biggest additional sanction so far has been to suspend head coach Rick Pitino for five ACC games. The other penalties include vacating wins in which ineligible players participated, placing the basketball program on four years’ probation, and issuing a 10-year show-cause order for former basketball operations director, Andre McGee. The NCAA has yet to vacate the Cardinals’ 2013 national championship against Michigan, which could be one reason Pitino and Louisville officials are adamant about appealing the decision. The NCAA began to look into the program following Katina Powell’s allegations that she and other escorts were hired to have sex parties and strip for Louisville recruits and players. The NCAA said the school must determine which games ineligible players participated in, and that might include the Cardinals title game. Players deemed ineligible would be those involved in the sex parties, which are considered impermissible benefits.
