MLB – Major League Baseball
Last Night
Tampa Bay Rays 5, Detroit Tigers 1
Chicago White Sox 4, New York Yankees 1
Chicago Cubs 9, Milwaukee Brewers 7

Rays 5, Tigers 1 – Andriese outpitches Fulmer as Rays beat Tigers 5-1
Matt Andriese outpitched Michael Fulmer, Tim Beckham hit a two-run homer, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 5-1 on Tuesday night. Andriese (1-0), who had lost seven of nine decisions dating to last June 25, allowed one run and four hits over six-plus innings. He retired 12 straight during one stretch.  Fulmer (1-1), last season’s AL Rookie of the Year, allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. Miguel Cabrera homered on his 34th birthday for the Tigers. Cabrera also went deep on his birthday in 2010 at Seattle. The Tigers extended a team record by homering in each of their first 13 games this season. It’s the longest streak in the majors since Cleveland homered 14 games in a row to open the 2002 season. The Indians’ streak was the longest in the last 100 years.

White Sox 4, Yankees 1 – Sox snap Yankees streak
Miguel Gonzalez pitched shutout ball into the ninth inning to win a road start for the first time in two years, Leury Garcia and Avisail Garcia homered off Luis Severino, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Yankees 4-1 Tuesday night to stop New York’s eight-game winning streak.  Gonzalez (2-0) allowed four hits _ all infield singles _ and one run in 8 1/3 innings, struck out four and walked one. He had been 0-7 in 19 road starts since a victory at Tampa Bay for Baltimore on July 25, 2015.  The right-hander retired his first 12 batters before Starling Castro’s infield single on a slow bouncer to shortstop leading off the fifth and threw just 88 pitches.

Cubs 9, Brewers 7 – Cubs rally to beat Milwaukee 9-7
Kyle Schwarber and Miguel Montero each hit a two-run homer, Albert Almora Jr. and Jon Jay added run-scoring hits in a four-run sixth inning and the Chicago Cubs rallied from five down in a 9-7 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night. Brewers slugger Eric Thames had two doubles and three hits but ended his franchise record-tying homer streak at five games. Wade Davis got his third save and the bullpen retired 15 of its final 16 batters as the Cubs snapped a four-game skid. The Brewers staked Jimmy Nelson to a 5-0 lead in the third, but the right-hander couldn’t make it hold, allowing seven runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. Reliever Jared Hughes (1-1) took the loss.  Brett Anderson pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed six runs and eight hits. Justin Grimm (1-0) worked a scoreless sixth for the win.

MLB – Pirates Marte suspended for 80 games
The Pittsburgh Pirates will have to compete in the tough National League Central Division for much of the season without all-star outfielder Starling Marte. He was suspended for 80 games by Major League Baseball today after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.  The league said Marte tested positive for the steroid Nandrolone. He will be eligible to return in mid-July but will be ineligible for the post-season if the Pirates make it that far.

NCAAHKY – Detroit lands 2020 Frozen Four at Little Caesars Arena
The Frozen Four is coming to Detroit. The NCAA’s men’s hockey championship will be held at Little Caesars Arena in 2020, one of several collegiate postseason events that will take place in the area in the coming years. The NCAA announced Tuesday that it had selected host sites for championships in Divisions I, II and III from 2017-18 through 2021-22.  In addition to the Frozen Four, Little Caesars Arena was awarded the 2022 Division I wrestling championships, as well as the first and second rounds of the men’s basketball tournament in 2021. The new arena also hosts first- and second-round NCAA Tournament games next year.   Detroit last held the Frozen Four in 2010 when they were held inside Ford Field.

NFL – Tulloch set to announce retirement from NFL
Stephen Tulloch is set to announce his retirement from the NFL. The Detroit Lions announced Tuesday that Tulloch will have a news conference Thursday in Allen Park to announce his retirement. The linebacker played five of his 11 NFL seasons with the Lions. Tulloch played his first five seasons with Tennessee, then had his stint with the Lions before playing last season with the Philadelphia. He started only one game for the Eagles. Tulloch started 113 games in his career.

NFL – NFL to announce regular-season scheduled on Thursday night
The NFL will release its 2017 regular-season schedule Thursday night.  The announcement will come during a TV show beginning at 8 p.m. EDT. Super Bowl champion New England will host the kickoff game on Thursday, Sept. 7, possibly in a rematch of the title game with Atlanta. The Patriots’ other home games are against division rivals Miami, Buffalo and the New York Jets, and Kansas City, San Diego, Carolina and Houston.  The season will end Dec. 31.

FIFA – North American bid for 2026 World Cup backed by Oceania
The United States, Canada and Mexico bid to co-host the 2026 World Cup is supported by the 11-nation Oceania soccer confederation. Oceania says it also agrees the bid should have “an exclusive period of negotiation” with FIFA for the next year.   The 211 FIFA member federations can decide on May 11 to give the North American neighbors a March 2018 deadline without rivals to show their bid is technically sound.  The bid launched this month is currently FIFA’s only realistic option for the expanded 48-team World Cup in 2026. FIFA rules bar European and Asian members
from bidding. Oceania’s FIFA vice president, David Chung, says “it makes sense on a rotational basis” for the 2026 edition to return to North America for the first time since the U.S.-hosted 1994 tournament.

Bid to ban dodgeball shot down by Louisiana school board
A plan to ban dodgeball and other “target games” from public schools has been scrapped by Louisiana’s top school board.  The prohibition was included in a new set of physical education benchmarks drawn up by nearly two dozen teachers and others on a standards committee.  But The Advocate reports that members of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education rejected the proposed ban Tuesday.  Holly Boffy, board vice president, said education leaders should be careful they don’t create regulations that discourage students from enjoying physical education.  A board committee voted for the physical education benchmarks to be revised to get rid of the dodgeball prohibition.  Kathy Hill, a member of the standards committee, said the ban on human targeting games was an attempt to be sensitive about bullying.
