Tuition at Lake Michigan College is going up. At a meeting Tuesday, the board of trustees approved an increase of 5% for students starting in the fall. LMC President Dr. Bob Harrison tells WSJM News the move was needed to keep up with rising costs for the college.

“When you look at the 5%, it’s broken down into reflecting the cost of medical inflation,” Harrison said. “So, medical care costs for our employees continue to go up. It looks at core inflation. So, anything we buy, like any business, that’s going to go up by approximately 2%. We have some built-in wage increases for staff, and we have to reflect those in the process that we charge. Then we’re also making investments in student success.”

Tuition will go up per contact hour by about $5 for in-district students, $7 for those out of district, and $9 for international students. LMC says most of the state’s community colleges have increased their tuition in the last seven years.
