Senate Committee Approves Spent Nuclear Fuel Resolution

A Michigan Senate committee has approved a resolution from state Senator John Proos calling on the federal government to find a permanent storage facility for the nation’s spent nuclear fuel rods. For years, Proos has been saying the feds need to make good on their promise to set up a repository for the waste. Senate Concurrent Resolution 9, approved by the Energy and Technology Committee Thursday, specifically urges the president to support the establishment of facilities for the reprocessing and recycling of spent nuclear fuel. Proos notes a 1982 Congressional act mandates the EPA to set up a permanent spent rod repository. Congress previously designated Yucca Mountain in Nevada for that purpose, but the project was never completed.
