Red Wings 3, Canucks 2 – OT – Abdelkader scores in OT, Red Wings beat Canucks 3-2
Justin Abdelkader scored 2:31 into overtime and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 on Tuesday night. Abdelkader got the winner by dropping to his knees just outside the crease to one-touch a precise pass from Henrik Zetterberg.  Frans Nielsen scored twice in the first period for Detroit and Zetterberg had two assists. Petr Mrazek made 25 saves. Reid Boucher tied it at 2 with 2:46 left in the third period for Vancouver, and Markus Granlund also scored. Ryan Miller made 25 saves. During the game, Detroit announced it had traded forward Steve Ott to Montreal for a sixth-round pick in the 2018 draft. Ott was scratched from Tuesday’s game.

NHL – Red Wings trade Smith to Rangers
The New York Rangers have acquired defenseman Brendan Smith in a trade with Detroit. In return the Red Wings got two draft picks, a third round choice this year and a number-2 next year. Detroit drafted Smith in the first round in 2007 and in 291 games he has 67 career points.

NHL – Blackhawks reacquire defenseman Oduya in trade with Stars
The Blackhawks have reacquired defenseman Johnny Oduya, who left in free agency for the Dallas Stars after being part of two Stanley Cup championships in Chicago. Dallas traded Oduya to the Blackhawks on Tuesday night in exchange for young forward Mark McNeill and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2018 NHL draft. Oduya first played for Chicago from 2012-15, with nine goals and 34 assists in 219 games. He appeared in 71 playoff games with the Blackhawks, including their Stanley Cup championships in 2013 and 2015. The 35-year-old Oduya has one goal and six assists in 37 games this season with the Stars. McNeill had six goals and 22 assists in 58 games for Rockford in the AHL. He has played in only one NHL game.

NHL – Blackhawks agree to extensions with Rozsival, Tootoo
The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to one-year contract extensions through next season with defenseman Michal Rozsival and forward Jordin Tootoo. In five seasons in Chicago, the 38-year-old Rozsival has played on two championship teams. He has one goal and one assist this year.  The 34-year-old Tootoo has played in  36 games after signing with Chicago last summer.  The Blackhawks announced the moves on Tuesday. Chicago, second in the Western Conference, goes for its fifth straight win and 10th in 11 games when it hosts Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

Ish Smith had 12 points, seven assists and seven steals for the Pistons. The backup point guard was scoreless heading into the fourth quarter but gave Detroit a huge lift down the stretch. Damian Lillard had 34 points and 11 rebounds for Portland while falling an assist shy of his first triple-double. He had only one assist after the start of the fourth, however, and the Trail Blazers were eventually done in by their inability to take care of the ball.  C.J. NBA – Warriors’ Durant hyperextends left knee against Wizards
Kevin Durant has a hyperextended left knee and the Golden State Warriors are preparing for his absence even before knowing how long he could be sidelined. Durant was hurt Tuesday early in Golden State’s 112-108 loss to Washington and the Warriors said he would have an MRI exam. Results are expected Wednesday but the Warriors aren’t waiting to line up another forward.  ESPN.com reported that the Warriors would sign veteran swingman Matt Barnes. Barnes posted a picture on Instagram of himself in uniform from his previous stint with the Warriors from 2006-08 and wrote: “Coming back to where it all started!”  Durant left 93 seconds into the 1st quarter.

NCAAFB – 3 players suspended, Michigan St coach issues statement
Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio has released a statement saying he has “high standards” for his football program and expects players and staff to “conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values and principles of Michigan State University.” Dantonio has kept a low profile after allegations of sexual assault were made against three football players. The school announced the players’ suspensions from team activities last month. They also were removed from on-campus housing. Their names have not been released.  A staff member associated with the football program also was suspended. Prosecutors have not announced any decision on charges.  Dantonio, whose team started spring practice last weekend, says he’ll be able to answer questions about the program “when the time is appropriate.”

NFL – NFL considering making referees fulltime
The NFL is considering making referees full-time employees and centralizing replay review at its New York headquarters as it aims for more consistent, shorter games. Those were the major topics of discussion when the league’s competition committee met Tuesday in advance of the league’s annual scouting combine.  Falcons president Rich McKay, chairman of the competition committee, noted that the collective bargaining agreement allows the league to hire as many as 17 full-time officials. “That is being discussed,” he told The Associated Press after the meeting. The positives, McKay said, are better, centralized training and, ultimately, greater consistency between crews.  Broncos boss John Elway, another member of the competition committee, said the caveat is that these referees have successful careers outside of football and they may not want to give up their day jobs.

NFL – Vikings fail to offer contract
The Minnesota Vikings have declined to exercise their option for next season on running back Adrian Peterson. The Vikings all-time leading rusher will be an unrestricted free agent when the market opens next week. Had the Vikings picked up the option it would have been worth $18 million. General manager Rick Spielman says the team will continue to investigate the possibility of bringing Peterson back. The 10-year veteran is coming off a meniscus tear in his right knee that limited him to 72 yards on 37 carries over parts of three games.

NFL – Police: Colts’ David Parry arrested in Scottsdale, Arizona
Indianapolis Colts defensive lineman David Parry has been arrested in Scottsdale, Arizona, on suspicion of assaulting the driver of a motorized cart and then stealing and crashing the vehicle.  Police say the 24-year-old showed signs of impairment when arrested early Saturday morning near where the cart was found crashed. According to police, the driver had picked up Parry and two other people and that the alleged assault and theft occurred after the driver dropped off the other two people and got out to be paid. Police said they do not know if Parry has an attorney who could comment on the allegations of robbery, auto theft, criminal damage, resisting arrest and DUI.    Colts spokesman Avis Roper said the team is gathering information. Parry was a 2015 fifth round draft pick.

NCAAWBB – Notre Dame, FSU each place 2 on all-ACC women’s hoop team
Top-seeded Notre Dame and No. 2 seed Florida State each placed two players on the all-Atlantic Coast Conference women’s basketball team. The 10-player first team was announced Tuesday following a vote of school representatives and media members. Forward Brianna Turner and guard Lindsay Allen helped the third-ranked Fighting Irish (27-3) make it four No. 1 seeds in four seasons in the ACC, which begins its conference tournament Wednesday in Conway, South Carolina.  The eighth-ranked Seminoles (25-5) placed forward Shakayla Thomas and guard Leticia Romero on the first team. Also on the first team were Duke’s Lexie Brown and Rebecca Greenwell, Louisville’s Asia Durr and Myisha Hines-Allen and the league’s top two scorers, Alexis Peterson and Brittney Sykes, both of Syracuse.
