The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has taken the first step toward setting up a countywide bus system. The board this week authorized moving forward with the formation of an authority that could consolidate various transit services. Community Development Director Dan Fette tells WSJM News that’s after an exhaustive study on the area’s needs.

“That study concluded that having these four different systems created a fragmented and difficult transportation network for riders to navigate, and the best way to start addressing those problems was to create a countywide transportation authority,” Fette said.

The goal is to form a more cohesive mass transit system that’s easier for riders to use. Fette tells us the county will start meeting with local community leaders next year to see how such a system might come together. It could take more than a year.
