Manufacturing is leading the way in reducing southwest Michigan’s unemployment rate. Southwest Michigan First Chief Executive Officer Ron Kitchens tells our newsroom manufacturers in the region are adding jobs left and right. It’s helped to push the unemployment rate down.

“Tens of thousands of new jobs, or almost 40,000 new jobs created in the last four years in the region,” Kitchens said.

The month-to-month unemployment rate has been pushed down 3.4% lower in those years. That number does not account for “disenfranchised workers” who have been out of work for an extended length of time.
