The Great Lakes area is remembering the Edmund Fitzgerald tragedy, 41 years after the boat sank amid a furious storm on Lake Superior. The Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City is one of several places that held a memorial today. For good reason, says academy superintendent Jerry Achenbach, who’s spent his career on the water.

“Great Lakes Maritime Academy cadet David Weiss was lost with all hands on the Edmund Fitzgerald,” Achenbach said.

Achenbach says cadets learn about the Fitzgerald and other maritime tragedies thru their training, as safety classes also include why those rules were adopted. All 29 people on board died in that storm, and the exact cause of the sinking is still debated today.
