People living in rural areas lacking in high-speed internet could benefit from legislation introduced this week by state Representative Aric Nesbitt, of Lawton. Nesbitt has proposed a 10-year personal property tax break for broadband providers that install new fiber. The tax abatement would apply to their material costs.

“This will help provide a few years for them to do the investment, and pick up customers before they start being taxed,” Nesbitt told WSJM News.

Nesbitt says people in rural areas should have the same quality of internet access as those in the city. He’s introduced his bill to the House Communications Committee, and hopes it can get a hearing and a House vote before the end of the year.
