Tigers 11, White Sox 5 – Cabrera powers Tigers past White Sox 11-5 for 7th straight
Miguel Cabrera hit his third home run in two games, Victor Martinez also went deep and the Detroit Tigers won their seventh straight by beating the Chicago White Sox 11-5 Tuesday night. Andrew Romine and Cameron Maybin tripled in a six-run fifth inning for the Tigers. Cabrera had three RBIs, and Anibal Sanchez (5-12) won for the first time as a starter since April 28 _ a span of 11 starts. He allowed one run and six hits in six innings. Avisail Garcia homered twice and Todd Frazier hit his 30th for Chicago. James Shields (3-6) held the Tigers scoreless for the first four innings, then got hit hard in the fifth. He had allowed only five runs in his previous four starts combined.
Cubs 3, Marlins 2 – Hammel, Chapman pitch Cubs past Fernandez, Marlins 3-2
Jason Hammel threw six scoreless innings, Dexter Fowler had three hits and the Chicago Cubs beat Miami ace Jose Fernandez and the Marlins 3-2 on Tuesday night. Hammel (11-5) extended Chicago’s scoreless streak to 24 innings before the bullpen overcame Pedro Strop’s shaky seventh. Aroldis Chapman hit 104.4 mph on the radar gun in a perfect ninth as the Cubs won for the sixth time in seven games. Fernandez (12-6) allowed three runs and eight hits over six innings, losing consecutive starts for the first time since his 2013 rookie season. Hammel, who gave up four hits, threw 80 pitches before being lifted for a pinch-hitter. Adeiny Hechavarria and J.T. Realmuto each hit an RBI single in the seventh off Strop, who also committed a throwing error. Chris Coghlan’s diving catch of Christian Yelich’s looping liner to left field with two on ended the threat.

MLB – Tigers minor league pitcher Britton suspended for positive test
Detroit pitcher Drake Britton has been banned for 50 games following a positive test for amphetamine under baseball’s minor league program. Britton, a 27-year-old left-hander,
is 0-3 with a 4.57 ERA this year in 37 relief appearances for Triple-A Toledo. The commissioner’s office announced the discipline Tuesday. There have been 63 suspensions this year under the minor league drug program and 13 under the major league program.
NFL – Lions bring back WR Copeland, waive Spadola
The Detroit Lions have signed wide receiver Damian Copeland, who rejoins the team after being released last week. The Lions also waived receiver Ryan Spadola. Copeland signed with the Lions earlier this offseason, then was released last week when Detroit signed Anquan Boldin. Copeland spent the past two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he missed both seasons on injured reserve following wrist and shoulder injuries. He was undrafted out of Louisville, where he caught 52 passes in his senior season in 2013.
NFL – NFL extends partnership with Snapchat
The NFL and Snapchat have announced a multiyear partnership, strengthening the relationship with the league and the mobile storytelling platform. The NFL worked with Snapchat during the 2015 season, when it says more than 70 million people viewed Snapchat’s live stories surrounding NFL games and events. The NFL will become the first sports league to have a presence on the “Discover” platform. Programmed by NFL Media, the content will give Snapchat users the latest headlines, trends and access to videos. Snapchat live stories will be produced for every NFL game during the season, along with the Super Bowl, the NFL combine and draft.
NASCAR – Little E to miss at least 2 more races due to concussion
Dale Earnhardt Jr. will miss at least two more races while he recovers from a concussion. Earnhardt skipped the last three races and will continue to be replaced by four-time series champion Jeff Gordon behind the wheel in the No. 88 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports. Earnhardt said on his weekly podcast that he continues to experience issues with balance and gaze stabilization.
Olympics – Obama, Biden to skip Rio Games
President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have no plans to attend the Olympics. The White House says U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will lead the American delegation to the games. He’ll be the highest-level U.S. official attending. The U.S. contingent will also include nine-time gold medal-winning swimmer Mark Spitz.
Olympics – Competition begins today
While the opening ceremony isn’t until Friday, today marks the first day of actual Olympic competition. The Women’s Soccer tournament begins today with six games. The first game has Sweden against Russia at 12:00 eastern, followed by Canada and Australia. The United States women’s national team begins at 6:00 p.m. against New Zealand. Men’s soccer begins on Thursday.
NCAA – Tar Heels fighting NCAA over disciplinary responsibility
North Carolina is holding off on self-imposed penalties while it challenges the NCAA’s jurisdiction to pursue charges in the school’s long-running academic fraud scandal. The school has publicly released its response to five potentially top-level NCAA charges, which include lack of institutional control. UNC is acknowledging problems tied to irregular courses in a department available to all students and popular with athletes. However, it argues that disciplinary action should be handled its own selected accreditation agency, not the NCAA.
NCAA Football – Buckeyes are No.1 in AP poll ranking
Ohio State is No. 1 — for 80 years. The Buckeyes top the first all-time Top 100 college football programs based on The Associated Press 80-year old college football rankings. The Buckeyes got the 1,112 points based on a formula that gives one point for each top 25 appearance, one point for a No. 1 ranking and 10 points for an AP championship. Ohio State has appeared in 852 of the 1103 polls since the inception of the AP ranking, good for a 77.2 percent showing. That was the best of all schools. Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Alabama and Southern California round out the top five and are followed by Nebraska, Michigan, Texas, Florida State and Florida.
NHL – McPhee gets help in Vegas
The Las Vegas expansion NHL team has hired Kelly McCrimmon as its assistant general manager under GM George McPhee. The 55-year-old led the Wheat Kings to the WHL title this past season after turning down a job in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ front office last summer. He is a three time WHL executive of the year and was the Canadian Hockey League’s executive of the year in 2009-10.
