Proos Backing Increased Penalties For Assaulting The Disabled

State Senator John Proos is co-sponsoring legislation designed to prevent the abuse of the developmentally disabled. He’s signed on to the plan that would toughen the penalties for knowingly assaulting a person with special needs.

“This is bipartisan,” Proos said. “Republicans and Democrats coming together to recognize that those with disabilities should not ever be preyed upon by individuals who would otherwise cause harm to those individuals.”

Under the bills, a first offense would be a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. Subsequent offenses would result in felony charges. Proos says all Michiganders should be allowed to live their lives with dignity.
