Researchers at the University of Michigan have figured out the molecular protein that the Zika virus makes that allows it to reproduce and to hide from an infected person’s immune system.

“This is a very mysterious virus,” says researcher Janet Smith. “It doesn’t stay around in the bloodstream of a person who gets infected for very long.”

Researchers say this new finding may provide ways to diagnose and treat the Zika virus.
