The Michigan Department of Transportation will soon be replacing traffic signals all over the city of St. Joseph. City Engineer Tim Zebell says the city is kicking in $488,000 to make sure the lights are of the mast arm variety. That means they’ll be suspended over their intersections on metal bars, instead of hanging from wires.

“MDOT is doing seven of the eight intersections where they have signals that are within the city limits of St. Joe,” Zebell told WSJM.

The only MDOT intersection in the city that won’t be affected at at Hilltop and Lakeview. Zebell says the mast arm signals have a look that city leaders wanted to implement all over the community. Since MDOT is doing the work, the city is able to buy the signals at a reduced cost. Zebell says had the city gone alone on the project, it would have cost almost $2 million.
