Indians 5, Tigers 3 – Napoli’s homer continues Indians’ mastery of Tigers 5-3
Mike Napoli hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning and the Cleveland Indians remained perfect in 10 games against the Detroit Tigers this season with a 5-3 victory on Monday night. Napoli hit an 0-1 pitch from Bruce Rondon (2-1) into the left-field bleachers, helping the Indians to their 12th straight win at home. Jeff Manship (1-1) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings and Cody Allen worked the ninth for his 18th save. The game ended when Jose Iglesias bounced into a double play. Iglesias was called safe at first, but it was reversed after a replay review. Cleveland has outscored Detroit 65-23 this season and the Indians now lead the Tigers by 6 1/2 games in the AL Central. The win also ended Cleveland `s two-game skid that followed a franchise-record 14-game winning streak. Nick Castellanos and Steven Moya homered for Detroit, which had won six straight.
White Sox 8, Yankees 2 – White Sox beat Yankees 8-2 for 3rd straight win
Tim Anderson and Dioner Navarro each hit a two-run homer off CC Sabathia, helping James Shields and the Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees 8-2 on Monday. Chicago had a string of 15 consecutive solo shots, matching a franchise record, before Anderson connected in the third inning, tying it at 2. Brett Lawrie hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the fifth before Navarro belted a drive to left field for his fifth homer. Anderson went 2 for 4 for his 12th multihit game since he was promoted from Triple-A Charlotte on June 10. Navarro has seven RBIs in the last three games _ all wins for resurgent Chicago. Chase Headley hit a two-run homer for New York, which has lost three of four.
Cubs 10, Reds 4 – Bryant, Contreras homer to help Cubs rout Reds 10-4
Kris Bryant hit his 24th home run before leaving with a bruised leg, Willson Contreras and Addison Russell also went deep, and the Chicago Cubs pounded the struggling Cincinnati Reds 10-4 on Monday. Playing the NL Central’s last-place team was just what the major league-leading Cubs needed after getting outscored 32-11 in a four-game sweep by the Mets in New York. The Reds, meanwhile, continued their slide. They dismissed pitching coach Mark Riggins in an effort to shake up a staff with the majors’ worst ERA, then lost for the 11th time in 13 games. Bryant hit a two-run drive in the 2nd inning and scored three times before exiting with a bruised left leg in the fifth.

MLB – Tigers place Zimmermann on 15-day DL with strained neck
The Tigers have put right-hander Jordan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list with a right neck strain. Zimmerman had been slated to start tonight against the Indians but Anibal Sanchez will start instead. The Tigers also called up right-hander Dustin Molleken from Triple-A Toledo.
MLB – Cubs slugger Kris Bryant leaves game with bruised left leg
Slugger Kris Bryant left yesterday’s game in the fifth inning after suffering a bruise to his left leg while making a catch in left field when he collided with center fielder Albert Almora Jr. Almora says he didn’t hear Bryant calling for the ball and took responsibility for the collision. Manager Joe Maddon says Bryant should be fine for today’s game against the Reds.
MLB – Melky Cabrera returns to White Sox lineup after wrist sprain
White Sox outfielder Melky Cabrera was back in the starting lineup yesterday after he missed five games with a right wrist sprain. Manager Robin Ventura put Cabrera in the lineup after swinging the bat on Sunday and saying the wrist felt pretty good.
NBA – Detroit’s Gbinije out of summer league with sprained ankle
Detroit Pistons rookie Michael Gbinije will miss the rest of summer league with a sprained right ankle. Gbinije, a 6-foot-7 guard drafted in the second round last month by the Pistons, was hoping to play in the Olympics for Nigeria. It’s not clear how this injury might affect those plans; a spokesman for the Pistons said Monday the only thing that’s been determined is that Gbinije will miss the remainder of the Orlando summer league. Gbinije averaged 17.5 points a game as a senior at Syracuse and helped the Orange to a Final Four appearance this year.
NBA – AP source: Pau Gasol, Spurs set on $30 million, 2-year deal
The San Antonio Spurs have agreed to terms with former Chicago forward Pau Gasol on a two-year deal worth $30 million, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement. The Spurs will have to make some roster moves to accommodate the salary under the NBA’s salary cap. Gasol had spent the last two seasons with the Bulls.
NBA – Durant joins Warriors
The Golden State Warriors have given their roster a huge boost by working out a two-year, $54 million contract with Kevin Durant. The agreement comes after Durant helped Oklahoma City take a three-games-to-one lead over the Warriors in the Western Conference finals before Golden State rallied to win the series. The 27-year-old Durant is a four-time NBA scoring champ and the 2014 league MVP who has averaged 27 points and seven rebounds over nine seasons.

Top-ranked and six-time champion Serena Williams has advanced to the Wimbledon women’s quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova, Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep and Venus Williams also reached the quarters by winning on Monday, as did Dominika Cibulkova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Yaroslava Shvedova, and Elena Vesnina. Fourth-round winners on the men’s side include second seed Andy Murray, third seed Roger Federer, No. 6 Milos Raonic and Marin Cilic.
Cycling – Tour de France – Cavendish wins again, Sagan holds yellow jersey
Britain’s Mark Cavendish is the winner of the third stage of the Tour de France. It was Cavendish’s second victory in this Tour and 28th overall, pulling him into a tie for second all-time. World champion Peter Sagan held on to the yellow jersey he claimed a day earlier.
Eating – Chestnut regains title in hot dog eating contest
Joey “Jaws” Chestnut has upset Matt Stonie to regain the championship title at the annual July Fourth hot dog eating contest at Nathan’s Famous in Coney Island. Chestnut downed 70 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes on Monday, beating out Stonie by 17 dogs. Both men are from San Jose, California. Chestnut’s 70 dogs were the most ever eaten at a competition. In 2013, he set a world record by eating 69 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. The 32-year-old Chestnut had won eight straight competitions in a row before losing the Mustard Yellow International Belt to Stonie last year in an upset. Contest officials said Chestnut set a new record last month when he ate 73 ½ hot dogs and buns during a qualifying event.
