Troy Melton threw seven sharp innings and Colt Keith hit a two-run single as the Detroit Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 8-0 to open their post-Tarik Skubal era. Detroit has won four straight and is one of several teams chasing the final AL wild card spot, moving within 1 1/2 games of Cleveland. Seattle has lost nine of 13 and dropped 3 1/2 games behind Houston in the AL West. The Tigers have scored at least eight runs in six straight games, tied for the longest such streak in team history. Melton extended his scoreless streak to 14 innings and lowered his ERA to 1.58.

Caleb Durbin hit a grand slam, Patrick Sandoval earned his first major league win in more than two years and the Boston Red Sox extended their winning streak to six games with a 14-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Wilyer Abreu launched a pair of solo homers for the rolling Red Sox, who hit four home runs for the second consecutive game and have won 24 of their last 27. Sandoval allowed two runs on six hits and four walks over five-plus innings. It was his first win since May 7, 2024, with the Angels.
Cubs 5, Dodgers 1 – Nico Hoerner shines as the Cubs spoil Tarik Skubal’s debut with Dodgers in 5-1 win
The Chicago Cubs have spoiled Tarik Skubal’s debut with the slumping Los Angeles Dodgers, posting a 5-1 victory behind key RBI singles by Nico Hoerner and Pete Crow-Armstrong. Dansby Swanson hit a solo homer as Chicago won for the third time in four games. Skubal permitted two runs and four hits in six innings in his first start since he was acquired in a blockbuster trade with Detroit on Saturday night. The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner threw 85 pitches, 51 for strikes. Kyle Tucker homered for Los Angeles, which finished with four hits in its fifth consecutive loss.

MLB – Melton continues dominant start in Tigers’ post-Skubal era
It’s only fitting that the last Detroit Tigers starter to match Troy Melton’s most recent feat is no longer on the team. Melton’s latest strong outing, which came in an 8-0 victory against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night, made it back-to-back starts of seven innings with three or fewer hits allowed. The previous Tigers starter to do that before Melton was Tarik Skubal, who is now employed by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Tarik Skubal has made his Los Angeles Dodgers debut, pitching six effective innings in a 5-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs. It was the first start for Skubal since he was acquired in a blockbuster trade with Detroit on Saturday night. The two-time Cy Young Award winner was booed when he was introduced with the starting lineups and once again when he went out to the mound for his first career appearance at Wrigley Field. Skubal surrendered a leadoff homer to Dansby Swanson on his first pitch of the third. He allowed 2 runs and 4 hits while throwing 85 pitches, 51 for strikes.
MLB –Holmes says he is looking forward to pitching in front of the Cubs’ stellar defense
Clay Holmes is looking forward to pitching in front of all those Gold Glove winners on the Chicago Cubs. Holmes is joining a new-look staff in Chicago after the Cubs bolstered their rotation and bullpen ahead of Monday’s trade deadline. The veteran right-hander and Kevin Gausman, who was acquired in a deal with Toronto on Sunday night, are expected to start this weekend at Kansas City. The 33-year-old Holmes has a 55.3 groundball percentage in nine major league starts this year. He says he is excited to pitch in front of Chicago’s stellar defense.

WNBA – Cleveland Sirens unveil name and branding for expansion WNBA team
The Cleveland Sirens introduced their name and branding during an event at Rocket Arena on Tuesday. The WNBA’s 16th team will begin play in 2028. Cleveland was home to one of the league’s original franchises when the WNBA started in 1997, but the Rockers folded in 2003 when owner Gordon Gund could not find a new buyer. Dan Gilbert’s Rock Entertainment Group, which has owned the Cavaliers since 2005, paid a $250 million expansion fee for Cleveland’s return to the WNBA.
NFL – White pushing for starting role with Lions after record-setting season in Vegas
Devin White finished last season as the NFL’s third-leading tackler. He’s no lock for a starting job with his new team. White had a career-high 174 tackles for the Las Vegas Raiders last season. He entered free agency after the season and was still available until the Detroit Lions, in need of linebacking depth, signed him to a one-year contract on Saturday. White said it’s a great opportunity that he didn’t want to let pass by. Meanwhile, the Lions are hopeful Jahmyr Gibbs could his contract situation settled soon after Atlanta running back Bijan Robinson agreed to a three-year contract extension through the 2030 season.
NFL – Chicago Bears RT Darnell Wright lands 4-year, $116 million contract
Chicago Bears right tackle Darnell Wright has agreed to a lucrative contract extension, answering a major question for the team going into the season. The Bears announced the four-year deal on Tuesday. Wright’s $116 million contract includes $93 million guaranteed, according to a person familiar with the agreement who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the details had not been announced by either side. Wright was the 10th overall pick in the 2023 draft out of Tennessee. He anchored an offensive line that helped the Bears rank third in the NFL in rushing last season.
NCAAFB – Freeman wants Irish players to focus on winning now to avoid playoff snub
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman wants his players focused on winning now — so they can avoid the trap of missing the College Football Playoff again. The Fighting Irish are expected to open the season ranked in the top five of the AP poll, and they could use last year’s snub as motivation to help guide the 2024 national runner-up back into the playoff field. Notre Dame opens the season on Sept. 6 against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field. Freeman urged his team on Tuesday to “stop worrying about the playoffs.” And he says last season showed how much work it takes to get there.
NCAAWFF – New title chase lies ahead as women’s flag football pushes for Championship
The NCAA has women’s flag football on the fast track to becoming a championship sport. There could be a national title game as early as spring 2028, before the LA Games, where flag football will make its Olympic debut. More than 120 schools are slated to field a team this academic year. A vote in January by Division I, II, and III officials could cement the sport’s inclusion. Schools are already recruiting and game-planning to build championship rosters. The NFL has thrown its weight behind the sport, sponsoring teams and tournaments, and USA Football is developing players to bring home an Olympic medal.
NCAA – Pac-12, Mountain West finalize settlement over `poaching’ and exit fees
The Pac-12 and Mountain West conferences have finalized a settlement over “poaching” and exit fees. The two conferences announced that all sides have reached final agreements to settle all pending litigation. The statement included Boise State, Colorado State, Utah State and The Board of Trustees of the California State University on behalf of San Diego State and Fresno State. The conferences announced an agreement in principle in May. The Pac-12 and some of new the schools joining the conference filed a lawsuit in California in 2024, claiming the poaching clause the league agreed to when it signed a scheduling agreement for its football teams was invalid. The clause called for payments to the Mountain West for a total of $55 million.
