Democratic lawmakers in Michigan are applauding the announcement of President Biden’s new program that will make work permits more easily obtainable for undocumented immigrants who are married to U.S. citizens.
State Representative Ranjeev Puri says the move will bring a boost to Michigan’s economy.
“When these folks get work permits, they won’t have to work under the table anymore,” Puri said. “That means they can’t be exploited and their wages will increase. The American Business Immigration Council estimates that this will draw in $16 billion of new economic activity. That also means that tax collections will increase and we can improve public services. This will also be good for economic growth and for small businesses.”
To qualify for what some are calling the Parole in Place program, immigrants must be married to U.S. citizens and have lived in the United States for ten years.
