Cubs 5, Nationals 1 – Swanson homers, Smyly sharp as Cubs beat Nationals 5-1
Dansby Swanson hit a two-run homer and Drew Smyly delivered seven solid innings as the Chicago Cubs bounced back from a rough series at Miami to beat the Washington Nationals 5-1. Swanson went 3-for-5, including a double and his second homer of the season. His blast to left-center in the fifth inning made it 4-1 — a welcome advantage for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game skid. All those losses to the Marlins were by one run. Smyly allowed a homer by Lane Thomas in the second inning but cruised from there, throwing just 84 pitches.

Tyrese Maxey added 26 points and Tobias Harris finished with 18 for the Sixers, who made 17 3-pointers in the absence of MVP finalist Embiid, who sat out with a sprained right knee. Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 39 points and 11 rebounds. Jaylen Brown added 23 points. Boston hosts Game 2 on Wednesday night.

Nuggets 98, Suns 87 – Nikola Jokic’s 39 points leads Nuggets past Suns 97-87
Nikola Jokic scored 39 points and pulled down 16 rebounds on the eve of the NBA MVP announcement to rally the Denver Nuggets to a 97-87 win over Phoenix on Monday night, giving them a 2-0 lead over the Suns in the Western Conference semifinals.  Devin Booker led Phoenix with 35 points and Kevin Durant added 24 but they combined to miss a whopping 32 shots, including 14 from long range. The Suns held Murray to 10 points 48 hours after he went off for 34 but they had no answers for Jokic.
