Illinois 91, Michigan 87 – 2OT – Illinois holds off Michigan 91-87 in double overtime
Matthew Mayer scored 24 points, Terrence Shannon Jr. added 21 and Illinois held off Michigan 91-87 in double overtime. Mayer opened the second overtime with a 3-pointer and a layup and the Fighting Illini (20-10, 11-8 Big Ten Conference) never trailed again. Mayer made 8 of 20 shots with four 3-pointers and added seven rebounds. Shannon sank only 4 of 14 shots — missing all five of his 3-point attempts — but he made 13 of 16 free throws, including 3 of 4 in the final 10 seconds to preserve the win. He also snagged seven rebounds and had four assists. Hunter Dickinson finished with 31 points and a career-high 16 rebounds to lead the Wolverines (17-13, 11-8). The 7-foot-1 junior has 12 double-doubles this season. Kobe Bufkin added 23 points and six rebounds. Jett Howard contributed 15 points and five boards before fouling out.

NCAAMBKB – Davis falls short in bid to break Maravich’s scoring mark
Antoine Davis missed his shot at making history. Detroit Mercy’s star guard finished four points shy of breaking Pete Maravich’s NCAA career scoring record, a mark that has stood since 1970. Davis, who leads the nation with a 28.4 points per game average, entered Thursday’s Horizon League tournament game against Youngstown State needing 26 to pass “Pistol” Pete’s mark. Davis finished with 22 after being slowed by a fourth foul. He missed four 3-pointers in the final two minutes of the intense loss. Davis finished with 3,664 points to Maravich’s 3,667. Maravich set his record in just three years at LSU.

Michigan State 67, Nebraska 64 – Hagermann, Michigan State women edge Nebraska 67-64
DeeDee Hagemann scored 18 points and assisted on Kamaria McDaniel’s clutch 3-pointer with just over a minute to go and ninth-seeded Michigan State held off eighth-seeded Nebraska 67-64 in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament. McDaniel’s 3 gave the Spartans a 67-56 lead with 1:06 to go and they held on to earn a quarterfinal date with top-seeded and second-ranked Indiana on Friday. Michigan State didn’t advance until Nebraska missed two good looks at a tying 3-pointer following a Spartans offensive foul with 15.9 seconds to go. Moira Joiner had 16 points for Michigan State and McDaniel added 12 points. Jaz Shelley scored 24 points for the Cornhuskers.

(17) Michigan 63, Penn State 61 – No. 17 Michigan women hold off Penn State in B10 Tournament
Laila Phelia and Emily Kiser scored 13 points each and Michigan and survived a Penn State comeback for a 63-61 in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament. The 17th-ranked and fifth-seeded Wolverines will play fourth-seeded Ohio State in Friday quarterfinals. The Buckeyes swept Michigan in two regular-season meetings. Leigha Brown added 12 points and nine rebounds and Elise Stuck had 11 points. Marisa McKenna and Leilani Kapinus scored 16 points each and Alexa Williamson 12 for the 13th-seeded Lady Lions.

Kraken 5, Red Wings 4 – OT – Bjorkstrand’s OT goal gives Kraken 5-4 win over Red Wings
Oliver Bjorkstrand scored his second goal on a power play with 1:27 left in overtime, lifting the Seattle Kraken to a 5-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings dealt two key players in the two days leading up to the NHL trade deadline on Friday. seemingly conceding they won’t make the playoffs for the first time since 2016. The Kraken are on pace to make their first postseason appearance in their second season as a Western Conference wild card or as one of the top three teams in the Pacific Division. Seattle’s Jared McCann also scored twice.  Detroit got goals from Ben Chiarot, Adam Erne, Jonatan Berggren, and Jake Walman.

Stars 5, Blackhawks 2 – Roope Hintz scores 3 times as Stars beat Blackhawks 5-2
Roope Hintz extended his scoring streak to four games with three goals and the Dallas Stars beat Chicago 5-2 in the Blackhawks’ first home game since the Patrick Kane trade. Jamie Benn snapped a tie in the third period and Matt Murray made 19 saves in his NHL debut, helping Dallas to its third win in four games. Back at home after Kane was dealt to the New York Rangers on Tuesday, Chicago dropped its third straight game. The Blackhawks showed a Kane tribute video during the first period and fans thanked the three-time Stanley Cup champion with chalk messages in a United Center parking lot.  Cole Guttman and Seth Jones had the goals for Chicago.

NHL – Wings and Blackhawks active before the trade deadline
Chicago’s Max Domi was dealt to Dallas on the forward’s 28th birthday. The move was announced after the Stars’ 5-2 victory — and after Domi was scratched for what the Blackhawks said was “roster management.”   Dallas also got minor league goaltender Dylan Wells from Chicago for veteran goaltender Anton Khudobin and a 2025 second-round pick.   NHL-leading Boston got the action going Thursday by acquiring winger Tyler Bertuzzi from Detroit for a top-10 protected first-round pick in 2024 and a fourth-rounder in 2025. The Red Wings are retaining half of Bertuzzi’s salary for the rest of the season. Bertuzzi is a 28-year-old pending free agent winger who gives Boston depth up front and insurance for injured winger Taylor Hall.

Spurs 110, Pacers 99 – Sochan, Vassell lead Spurs past Pacers in Popovich’s absence
Jeremy Sochan had 22 points and 13 rebounds for his first career double-double and the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Indiana Pacers 110-99. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich missed the game because of an illness. Devin Vassell scored 18 points for the Spurs in his return after being out for 25 games following arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. Popovich and lead assistant Brett Brown were out with non-COVID-19 illnesses. Popovich is expected to return for Saturday’s home game against Houston. Spurs assistant Mitch Johnson collected his first victory in Popovich’s absence. San Antonio has won two straight after dropping a franchise-record 16 in a row. Buddy Hield had 27 points to lead the Pacers.

NFL – Jalen Carter, top NFL prospect, posts bond in fatal crash
Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter has returned to the NFL scouting combine after turning himself in to Athens police Wednesday night and posting a combined bond of $4,000 on charges of reckless driving and racing in relation to a fatal crash that killed a teammate and team staffer. Carter, projected as one of the top players in next month’s NFL draft, left the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis after being informed of the arrest warrant issued in conjunction with the Jan. 15 crash that killed teammate Devin Willock and a recruiting staff member. Carter says he expects to be “fully exonerated.”
