The final results in the 36th annual Berrien RESA Science Olympiad have been tallied.

After participating in 23 STEM related events throughout the Lake Michigan College Campus on a dreary Friday morning, St. Joseph High School and Upton Middle School took home first place awards at the annual competition. The high school team won 10 individual events, while the Upton team won 14 events.

Lakeshore High School finished second, winning four events, while Lakeshore Middle School won two events and earned second place in the middle school division. Berrien Springs finished third in both middle and high school divisions.

St. Joseph HS, Upton MS, Lakeshore HS, Lakeshore MS and Berrien Springs MS each advance to the state finals April 22 at Michigan State University.

Berrien RESA Student Activities Coordinator Tonya Snyder said despite having to cancel the awards ceremony due to weather, the day was a success.

“Today is all about hands on science, and kind of showing the science in the world around you – whether it’s building a device and exploring that part of science or just taking a test and seeing how well you know the human body or how electricity works,” Snyder said. “We had a really great group of about 200 students out there taking over Lake Michigan College.”

Participating schools include Berrien Springs Middle and High school, Brandywine High School, Buchanan Middle and High school, Lakeshore Middle and High school, Mildred C. Wells Academy, Ring Lardner Middle School, River Valley Middle School, Upton Middle School, St. Joseph High School and Watervliet Middle School.
