State Senator Aric Nesbitt is among those expressing grief after the death of a Paw Paw volunteer firefighter Wednesday. The firefighter was killed by a fallen power line. Nesbitt on Thursday issued a statement, saying his heart and prayers are with the family and those who served with him. Nesbitt says, “Our communities are blessed by our brave first responders who put the needs of others before their own. This tragedy is a hard reminder that these men and women put their lives on the line with each and every call they respond to. May God be with the family during this difficult time.”

Also Thursday, the Berrien County Board of Commissioners observed a moment of silence for the firefighter. They were led by Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey. Commissioner Teri Freehling said the board’s “heartfelt prayers go to the family and to the department.”

Consumers Energy has launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the firefighter’s death. The Paw Paw Fire Department has not yet released his name.
