The Michigan Department of Treasury is urging everyone to check its unclaimed property website to find out if the state is holding an asset they’re owed. Department unclaimed property manager Terry Stanton tells us the state has millions in unclaimed assets that include dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, valuables left in safe deposit boxes, and stock certificates. He says these things sometimes come into the state’s possession when employers are left with payments no one has collected.

“If someone has lived in multiple states or moved frequently throughout their careers or their lifetime, then chances are that they may have unclaimed property based on another address, somewhere they lived ten years ago, or maybe the mail isn’t getting forwarded anymore or the likes of that,” Stanton said.”

Stanton says the state last year paid out more than 51,000 claims, totaling nearly $137 million. You can go to the unclaimed property website and search for your name or cities where you’ve lived. From there, you can file a claim to receive what you’re owed. The website can be found right here.
