St. Joseph City Commissioners have approved a resolution in support of the Berrien County Trails Master Plan. At a meeting this past week, commissioners heard from the Friends of Berrien County Trails, which has sought support from municipalities throughout the county. City Manager John Hodgson told us the commission is committed to a better connected trail system.

“It’s really pretty amazing,” Hodgson said. “This is a grass roots effort that came up from residents throughout the county on the importance of having a trails system, a non-motorized pathway, and understanding this is an area where we’ve kind of fallen behind some other areas.”

In 2021, the St. Joseph City Commission was the first local government in Berrien County to support the creation of the trails master plan, contributing $5,000 toward the effort. The plan was finished in 2022 and is now available online. Mike Garey with the Friends of the Berrien County Trails told commissioners Monday the group is now seeking official support from local governments for the document so it can better its chances of acquiring grants. St. Joseph Township Trustees also backed the trails plan this week.
