More than 10,000 Michigan workers filed for unemployment benefits last week after losing their jobs. That’s an increase of about 1,000 over the prior week. The number has been going up week by week, and this is the highest number of job losses in 14 weeks. In November, about 8% of businesses said they were laying off employees, while in December, the number was up to 20%. Small business network Alignable reports three out of four small businesses around the country have implemented a hiring freeze through the spring. They say inflation is making it too difficult to hire new full-time workers.
