The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is asking people to avoid travel if they can. Undersheriff Chuck Heit tells us the department has been busy due to the blizzard.

“There are several slide offs and crashes with the road conditions,” Heit said. “So, we’re asking people, unless absolutely necessary, to stay off the roads. With the snow that we’ve gotten and the high winds, visibility at times is very low. If people do not need to travel, we’re asking them to stay off the roads.”

Are the road conditions any better in cities like Benton Harbor and Niles than in the rural townships?

“The visibility can still be a problem based on the high winds. Some of Those streets may get cleared sooner, but again, with the visibility, it’s a problem as well.”

Heit says as long as the wind is blowing around so much snow, people should avoid travel. It’s expected the storm will taper off on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Cass County Sheriff’s Department has issued a travel advisory that asks everyone to stay off the roads through noon Saturday. It says some roads in Cass County are impassable.
