Berrien County leaders are urging residents to head over to FCC.gov to see a map of broadband availability around the country and to check if it’s accurate. Speaking at a Thursday meeting, Berrien County Commissioner Teri Freehling said a memo has been posted to the county’s website directing people to the FCC map.

“This is an effort to get citizens to help with the FCC map, to challenge,” Freehling said. “Whether it’s your location or your accessibility that’s being reported, this is being used for additional funding that’s coming from the state and the federal government. So, we are asking that the public help us to be able to verify that the information that’s there is accurate and correct.”

Berrien County just got done compiling detailed maps of broadband availability with the help of some contracted firms. That’s as it seeks grants and other funding to help expand high-speed internet to those areas of the county that are lacking. Freehling says you can challenge the FCC’s information regarding your own property, and the county is preparing a bulk challenge to better position itself for more assistance. You can find the FCC map right here.
