With the November 8 election just about here, the Alliance for the Great Lakes is asking voters to keep the interests of the lakes in mind when considering which candidates to support. Spokesperson Jennifer Caddick tells us, for one thing, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which supports all kinds of lakes programs, is something advocates want to continue.

“The Alliance for the Great Lakes and advocates around the region have been asking for increases at the federal level for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, and that’s going to be am important decision for elected officials, particular in coming years, as they made decisions about the federal budget.”

In 2019, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative was allocated $300 million per year. That’s not the only issue, though. Caddick says you don’t have to be an environmentalist to want to support healthy Great Lakes.

“We continue lots of tourists coming here, people enjoying the lakes, businesses being able to use the lakes, and safe drinking water.”

She notes seven Great Lakes states have gubernatorial elections this year. Six states have U.S. Senate races on the ballot. All seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are up for election.
