The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has voted to seek a couple of grants to help with the extension of a trail along M-63 near St. Joseph. At a Thursday meeting, the board authorized County Administrator Brian Dissette to seek Transportation Alternatives Program funding to the tune of $1.4 million for the Lakeview trail. Commissioner Jim Curran said at a meeting last week this trail is near the Whirlpool headquarters.

“It is to continue the non-motorized trail along M-63 between Higman Park Road and Monte Road, calling the Lakeview Trail,” Curran said. “Monte Road is the trailhead that’s on the Whirlpool property. So, this is a grant that we’re applying for through MDOT.”

The board is seeking a $600,000 DNR SPARK grant and a $300,000 Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant for the trail extension. The county would commit to a 39% match on the project. The overall cost of the project is expected to be $2.3 million.
