Corewell Health South, formerly Spectrum Health Lakeland, is teaming up with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department for a drug takeback day this month. It says everyone can safely dispose of expired, unused, or unwanted prescription drugs during the National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 29. Drop off disposal containers will be on the west side of Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital on Napier Avenue in St. Joseph from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Anyone who wants to dispose of drugs should enter the hospital off Morton Avenue, near the emergency department entrance. Corewell says it’s best to get rid of unwanted medications via a drug takeback day so the medicines don’t wind up in the wrong hands or the environment. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department will oversee the collection site and ensure the drugs are destroyed. Medications will be accepted in their original container or in sealed baggies. During last year’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, nearly 5,000 sites collected more than 744,000 pounds of medications.
