The Berrien County Parks Department will offer a fall scrap tire collection event this weekend. The department’s Genevieve Crevier tells WSJM News county residents who have old tires sitting around and taking up space can drop them off at the Berrien County Road Department office on Napier Avenue in Benton Township Saturday and Sunday so the tires can be recycled. It’s better to dispose of tires responsibly than to let them become part of the waste stream. For one thing, Crevier says tires are mosquito breeding grounds, but that’s not all.

“If a fire starts, it’s just really hard to put them out, and they’re just always in the way in ditches,” Crevier said. “The road department others who are kind enough have to pick them up. It’s just a hazard and a hassle. So, we try to provide this service whenever we can so people have one place where they can drop tires off and they’re be taken care of properly.”

The fees are $1 per passenger tire and $2 per passenger tire still on the rim. No oversized tires will be accepted. The drop off hours will be Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Sunday for the same hours. Crevier says the county works with a Sturgis firm to recycle the tires. They’re made into a variety of things, most notably, turf.
