The results of a broadband study in Berrien County are in, and county commissioners are learning more about what will be needed to ensure the entire area can be connected. Speaking to colleagues Thursday, Commissioner Teri Freehling said some of the findings of a parcel-by-parcel study of the area were shared at a meeting of the county’s broadband task force last week.

“What has been found through the data that’s been collected is we have about 12,000 parcels within Berrien County, of the 86,500 that exist,  that are currently unserved by broadband standards,” Freehling said. “So, that’s about 15% of the county that’s unserved but could be served with proper  prioritization and work like what we’re currently doing here.”

Freehling said about 50 people attended last week’s meeting, including representatives of schools, libraries, and medical facilities. She told commissioners they will hear a report on the study results next week.
