The Michigan Maritime Museum on the Black River in South Haven has reopened after being completely rebuilt over the past year. Executive director Patti Montgomery Reinert tells us they raised a lot of money for the work.

“We’re very proud of it,” she says. “Our original goal was $8 million when we started and we’re just over $7.5 million now, so this building is completely paid for. We are working ourselves into Phase Two, so the boardwalk that you see out by the water will go all the way around and wrap to the bridge when we’re finished.”

The museum has a new exhibit called “Full Steam Ahead” that gives visitors a look at steamship travel on the Great Lakes decades ago. Adult admission is $12 in summer, $10 in winter, with seniors getting in for $11 in summer and $9 in the winter. Military members pay $8 in summer and $6 in winter, and children and students are $8 in summer and $6 in winter.
