Berrien RESA is planning a series of reading events for young children and their parents around the county. Outreach coordinator Laura Robinson tells us The Parents as Teachers program and libraries throughout the county are teaming up for Reading Around the County, intended for kids up to age 5. She says those who attend will take part in a book reading lead by costumed readers.

“The goal is to get kids to love to read, and you have to love reading before you can be a good reader,” Robinson said. “So, to get kids interested in stories and make that connection between stories and books is the idea. And to get them excited about enjoying books together and encouraging families to share books together.”

Robinson says the activity is free, and children at each location will receive a book. Parents are encouraged to bring blankets to sit on during the story sessions. The first event will be Tuesday, September 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Lake Bluff Park in St. Joseph. The second event will be Friday, September 30 at Niles Riverfront Park by the Amphitheatre, also from 11:30 to 12:30. There is no need to register to attend.
