The United Way of Southwest Michigan is signing up volunteers for its annual Rake a Difference program. Spokesperson Jennifer Tomshack tells us Rake a Difference is when the United Way has volunteers do some yard work for seniors in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties.

“We will have hundreds of area volunteers who will be working as teams to help seniors throughout Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties to do fall yard work,” Tomshack said. “They’ll rake leaves, bag them up, and also in some cases, cleaning out gutters.”

Tomshack says Rake a Difference helps out those who can’t do that kind of work.

“The seniors are just so grateful. That’s the best part of this. If you do volunteer, you’re going to run into so many seniors who are just so happy that you’re coming, that you’re helping. The thank you notes that we get afterwards are just so heartwarming, and it makes it all worth it.”

Rake a Difference day will be Thursday, November 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those who sign up should bring their own rake and also a ladder if they wish. The United Way will provide bags, gloves, and tarps. Tomshack says they need volunteers who can go to Van Buren and Cass counties. You can sign up to take part right here.
