The Michigan Department of Transportation is doing what it can to give drivers a break this Labor Day weekend. MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us the agency is suspending road projects, where possible, to help make travel smoother. Of course, they can’t end all lane restrictions.

“There are 60 something projects around the state where there will still be some restrictions in place over the weekend,” Schirripa said. “A bridge is out or a lane doesn’t exist, obviously, we can’t get out of the way there. That’s going to have to stay in place, but we get out of the way as much as possible and let folks drive.”

So, where will there be restrictions still in place?

“The I-94-US-31 project there in Benton Township, there are only two lanes open for I-94 between I-196 and Puetz Road. The southbound I-196 ramp to eastbound I-94 is still closed and detoured, so that will be in place for the weekend.”

Schirripa says MDOT also has some trouble suspending work in the Detroit area, where virtually all the highways have some kind of work going on. He suggests drivers keep an eye on Michigan.gov/Drive before hitting the road to be aware of all construction they’ll encounter.
