The christening for the first new Great Lakes freighter to be launched in 36 years has been held. The christening of the 639-foot M/V Mark W. Barker was on Tuesday.

Ohio-based Interlake Steamship Company built the freighter, its 10th, and the vessel had its maiden voyage starting July 27. It sailed from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin July 27 and headed to Port Inland, Michigan, to be loaded up with stone. It then took the stone to Muskegon.

The ship was made with steel from Indiana and its construction began in August of 2019.
