1859 Installation of the first hotel elevator was completed in the Fifth Avenue Hotel, New York.

1913 The mermaid statue in the harbor of Denmark, Copenhagen was dedicated. A tribute to the 1834 story by Hans Christian Anderson. It is visited by half a million tourists every year.

1937 The legless swimmer, known as “The Human Fish,” started a six-day 150-mile swim from a pier in Albany, NY to the 125th Street Ferry dock in New York City. Forty-six-year-old Charles Zimmy lost his legs at age nine in an accident and his legless body provided enough buoyancy to float while sleeping.

1966 The Beatles were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with the double a sided ‘Yellow Submarine – Eleanor Rigby’. The group’s eleventh No.1. Paul McCartney said he came up with the name Eleanor from actress Eleanor Bron, who had starred with The Beatles in the film Help! Rigby came from the name of a store in Bristol, Rigby & Evens Ltd, Wine & Spirit Shippers.
