The Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven will hold a weekend of activities for kids focused on Great Lakes stewardship this Friday and Saturday. Museum Education Director Ashley Deming tells us Friday will feature Make a Splash with Trash, a beach cleanup that’s a partnership between the museum and the South Haven Center for the Arts.

“We’re going to do the beach cleanup first with the Michigan Maritime Museum,” Deming said. “One of our local beaches right here in the Great Lakes. You can come to the museum and pick up a bucket and gloves and we’ll head on out and do that for about an hour. Then we’re going to come back to the museum campus where the Center for the Arts will be helping us make some art with some of the items we collect.”

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The next day, Saturday, the museum will host the annual Rain Gutter Regatta. The kids will make sailboats out of water bottles and other recycled materials and then race them in a rain gutter. The event will run from 1 to 3 p.m. and is free with museum admission. Deming says the Michigan Maritime Museum wants to teach kids to respect and protect the Great Lakes so it will become a lifelong habit.
