Lake Michigan College and Berrien RESA will team up next week for an ESports Open House at LMC in Benton Township. RESA’s Kevin Clark tells WSJM News the Southwest Michigan ESports League has grown in popularity that last few years with around 100 students joining school teams. The students compete in video games with an emphasis put on problem solving a teamwork. Clark says ESports have multiple benefits.

“Number one, getting kids involved and engaged in their school community through ESports,” Clark said. “It’s a matter of the more engaged in the community of their school that the kids are, the more successful they’re going to be in general.”

About 200 colleges and universities now have an ESports program, offering $15 million in scholarships and shifting majors to employ graduates in the field. Clark says RESA and LMC will welcome gamers of all stripes to the LMC campus on Tuesday, August 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. to learn about local ESports teams and to play some games. Tuesday’s event is open to students entering grades 9-12. Lunch will be provided and registration is free.
