If you’re an animal lover, Berrien County Animal Control could use your help. Interim shelter manager Ashley Herr tells WSJM News they’re in dire need of volunteers to care for the dogs and cats. Right now, they’ve got about 80 dogs at the shelter.

“90% of those dogs do need to go outside, they do need to be handled,” Herr said. “Some of them aren’t always the nicest, so we don’t always get everybody out, but the ones that are nice and can be socialized, they do need to go outside and be socialized and have people spending time with them.”

Herr says the other animals need people to spend time with them, too.

“We have activities from reading to cats or dogs to making Popsicles. All those are sorts of fun things for younger kids. As long as they have someone who is of age with them here in the shelter, they’re welcome to come out as well.”

Otherwise, you must be 18 years of age or older to volunteer. Herr says they need at least 10 to 15 additional volunteers. Those who sign up are paired up with an experienced volunteer or staff member who trains them. Anyone interested in helping out can call Berrien County Animal Control.
