A new mental health crisis line is launching nationally this weekend. Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Behavioral Health Director Debra Pinals tells WSJM News the FCC has reserved 988 to be the crisis line. It chose a simple, three digit number so anyone can remember it. Those having a crisis, whether a substance abuse problem or thoughts of suicide, can call 988 to get help.

“They will speak to trained counselors,” Pinals said. “There are call centers in Michigan where local call responders will answer the phone. They will be able to talk to people, help them to identify potential coping strategies, and work with them to identify resources.”

Dr. Pinals says studies have found that crisis lines help because a lot of people who are in a crisis just need to talk to someone. The service will be anonymous in most cases and free. Funding for 988 was established by Congress in 2020. Pinals says the roll out of 988 as an easier number to remember will provide a natural extension to the work of the department in implementing the Michigan Crisis and Access Line. The new hotline does not replace the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, but is an extension of it.
