The Harbor Impact Foundation has been awarded a $50,000 Big Idea Grant from the Frederick S. Upton Foundation to help build a state-of-the-art indoor sports facility in Benton Harbor. Foundation President Rodney Alexander tells WSJM News the plan is to construct a $12 million to $15 million facility to give adults and children a place to play in a safe environment.

“[It could have] up to six basketball courts, one indoor football field, a track around the football field, a track around the football field, mental health counselor rooms, tutoring, a STEM academy,” Alexander said. “There’s a lot that can be done in this facility we’re trying to build for the community.”

Alexander announced the Harbor Impact Foundation earlier this year and started seeking funds. He says the foundation has more meetings with local organizations as it raises money, and more announcements are likely soon. He’s identified two possible sites for the sports facility. The grant from the Upton Foundation will go toward consulting work and studies on the impact the facility will have. You can find out more right here.
