Over $132,000 is being received by Hartford Public Schools from the Native American Heritage Fund to help pay for their mascot name change. In October, the district announced Huskies had been picked by a student-led committee to replace Indians. The Native American Heritage Fund is providing almost $480,000 in grants to four school districts for mascot changes and Western Michigan University’s Native American Affairs Council and the Michigan College Access Network.

Along with Hartford, Saranac Community Schools, Chippewa Hills School District and Lansing School District are getting money. They will be awarded the grants at the NAHF Grand Award ceremony on August 19 at FireKeepers Casino Hotel in Battle Creek.
