The city of South Haven will celebrate Juneteenth with an event on Saturday, June 18 from 2 to 9 p.m. The city council approved the event at Elkenburg Park last night. Black Lives Matter’s Mo’Nique Crowley says it will be very similar to last year’s event.

“We’re hoping to make this an annual thing and I hope it gets bigger and better every year,” Crowley says. “We’re gonna have a bounce house for the kids, we’re gonna have vendor tents for Black-owned businesses to come our and get support from the South Haven community.”

It will also include a free BBQ, basketball, volleyball, double dutch, and music. Fireworks will also be set off from Crowley’s home at 10 p.m. Juneteenth marks the day that slaves in Galveston, Texas learned of the surrender of the Confederacy months after it happened.
