A food drive is being held this month by the United Way of Southwest Michigan. Spokesperson Jennifer Tomshack tells WSJM News this is the second year for the Summer Stock Up local food drive held with the Kellogg Company and United Ways throughout the state.

“United Ways all over the state are going to be doing physical food drives as well as virtual donation drives so that money can then be used to restock local food pantries,” Tomshack said. “Even though it’s a statewide event, anything that you donate is tied to your zip code.”

Tomshack says this all started with the United Way of Southwest Michigan’s Christmas in June drive, seeking to help food pantries in the dry months.

“A lot of people during the holiday season are feeling very generous, and they restock their local food panties. But usually about this time of year, the pantry shelves can get pretty lean.”

Kellogg got word of the United Way of Southwest Michigan’s June effort and sought to make it statewide last year. The collection site in Berrien County are First Church of God Life Center in St. Joseph and the Berrien County Youth Fair in Berrien Springs. For Van Buren County, it’s Lawrence Elementary School in Lawrence. For Cass County, it’s Brookside Learning Center in Cassopolis. The drive continues through June 15 and the distribution of the food will be June 16. You can find out more right here.
