Shootings like this week’s in Texas can leave an trauma on the first responders who helped at the scene. The goal of a nationwide treatment program called Help for Our Heroes is to help first responders and military cope with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other symptoms. Tamara Evans, is a therapist for Help for Our Heroes.

“I believe that with time a person can return to – I don’t want to use the word function and quality of life, but that’s how you measure it,” Evans said. “Those things will never be unseen, they will never be undone. Nobody’s going to take away those memories and how the shape you as a person, but you can certainly learn to live a  happy life without that taking away everything that matters to you.”

Evans says the program was created by a veteran to address the unique needs of people who are exposed to a lot of death at their job. To learn more, go to HelpForHeroes.com.
