Students at 26 schools around the state will be offered primary care and mental health support services through newly established school-based centers, thanks to funding approved by the Michigan Legislature in the latest budget. The School-Community Health Alliance of Michigan says among the schools and organizations to benefit are South Walnut Elementary School in Bangor, Eau Claire High School, the Benton Harbor Student Health Center, and the Ranger Wellness Center in Cassopolis. It thanked state lawmakers this week for the funding, but said more is needed. It says $25 million in Fiscal Year 2023 could support establishing up to 100 new centers in school districts across Michigan. The centers provide services and supports to students ages 5 through 21, year-round. The 26 new centers announced this week come as a result of $5 million in COVID supplemental spending approved by legislators in 2021.
